BMC is restless in their pursuit of perfection. Because of this, they re-engineered their popular Speedfox platform, and the standard-bearer, the Speedfox 01. This is a trail bike that has improved it’s climbing, it’s descending, it’s overall performance. It still features both 27.5 and 29er wheel choices, because they both believe big rolls better and believe people should choose the size that best reflects their riding needs.
The change people talk about first is a new technology called Trailsync. It’s a cable-actuated handlebar-mounted lever system that simultaneously drops the seatpost and opens up the rear suspension. Ride with your saddle high and suspension firm for the climbs and flats, drop it a bit for rough stuff, drop it all the way when letting it all hang out at high speed. The drop is 80mm for the Small, 100mm for the Medium, and both the Large and XL have 120mm. There’s a stop 35mm down before dropping the whole way. BMC routes the cable internally to both the shock and the post. The post itself is an alloy mast with a post-topper similar to what you find on seat-masted road bikes. You cut the mast to get close to the right size, and then fine-tune with the topper clamp.
Travel for the bike is 120mm for the frames that fit 29er wheels, 130mm for the 650b wheels. The travel is controlled by BMC’s proven Advanced Pivot System (APS), which features an aluminum rocker and sag indicators, so you can easily dial in your suspension. The ride is able to provide tremendous sensitivity while still isolating bumps from pedaling. Thanks to the compact design, it’s easy to fit in the frame, super-stiff at the linkage points, and light.
The frame is molded out of carbon fiber, with a carbon-fiber rear triangle to boot. Shaping is extensive, working to maximize torsional stiffness at the bottom bracket and head tube, while still keeping the bike light, and even a little designed-in vertical compliance. Weight is fairly light at 2330g, including shock. As the clean design suggests, all the cables are routed internally. What you can’t see is that they’ve also installed internal guides to make the internal routing simple and easy. You’ll also find a rubber bumper underneath the bottom of the downtube, a mud guard covering the lower linkage, and another bumper on the right chainstay. The bottom bracket standard is BB92. You can set this bike up either with a 1x system, or a sideswing front derailleur if you want 2x. There’s even a chain guide above the bottom bracket shell to prevent the chain from being wedged between the crank and the frame. The rear derailleur can mount to either a standard or direct mount hanger.
The frame also features Boost technology. That’s a 148x12mm rear thru-axle. The extra width means greater lateral stiffness as well as room for wider tires. You can fit 58mm wide tires between the rear stays with 6mm of clearance. The fork on complete bikes comes as a Boost fork as well. The steerer tube is designed to take a tapered 1 1/8” to 1 ½” steerer. The frame was designed to work with 51mm offset and 120mm travel forks for the 29ers and 46mm offset and 130mm travel for the 650b wheels.
With all these standout features, it might be easy to forget about the ride. BMC hasn’t. And they’ve further dialed in the geometry.
As has been noted elsewhere, BMC is staffed with riders who are passionate about two-wheeled pursuits. They design their bikes to work in the demanding conditions they find outside their doors. Switzerland, being a mountainous country with trails everywhere, begs for any bike to be an efficient climber. The geometry has been dialed further to make sure the bike climbs with ease, but still have the stability necessary to descend with confidence. BMC gets to this place with medium-length chainstays and moderate head angle. They expect riders to install relatively short stems, as they spec their S frame with a 45mm stem, and the rest with 55mm.
The frame has post mounts for the brake mounting. It can fit 140mm rotors without adapters, and can go up to 180mm with adapters. When bought as a complete bike, 180mm rotors, front and rear, are standard.
